Flushing Town Hall
honors Liu with gala

Flushing Council on Culture & the Arts will honor a favorite son at its Annual Gala at Flushing Town Hall on Thursday, April 22 – New York City Comptroller John Liu.

The magic of Flushing’s – and the Hall’s – diversity, arts and community will be celebrated at the Gala through a mosaic of entertainment and cuisines, beginning at 6 p.m. in the landmark structure, located at 137-35 Northern Boulevard.

Cheryl Henson, president of the Jim Henson Foundation, will also be honored. The foundation has promoted and developed the art of puppetry in the United States since its founding by Muppets creator Jim Henson in 1982.

In addition, Flushing Town Hall Jazz Producer Clyde Bullard and Assistant Director of the Mayor’s Office of Contract Services, Michelle Miao will be feted at the event.

Bullard has been the producer of Flushing Town Hall’s Jazz Live! series since 1998. A professional musician who has performed with Tony Bennett, Freddie Jackson and Vivian Reed among others, he was principal bassist for the Boys Choir of Harlem for over 17 years.

Miao joined the board of the Council/Hall in 2007 as Mayor Bloomberg’s designated representative, and became a regular board member a year later – when the mayor designated her to represent him on the board of Queens Botanical Garden.

“Each of these honorees has played an instrumental role in making Flushing Town Hall the valuable cultural resource it is today for the city of New York and the borough of Queens,” a spokesperson for the Council said.

The Gala’s International Food Tasting will feature offerings from Flushing’s finest eateries including: ARISU and Mulan from Queens Crossing Mall; Deluge from Sheraton LaGuardia East; Kane’s Diner and Mellie’s.

Bourbon Street from Bayside, Cascon Bakery from Whitestone; London Lennie’s Seafood Restaurant of Rego Park and students from Long Island City High School’s Culinary Program will also present delectable dishes.
