Molloy earns a key victory

Molloy played at a high level for a complete 32 minutes Friday evening. As a result, the Stanners earned a much-needed victory over a quality opponent, topping St. Raymond’s 74-63 at home.
“It was a great win,” Molloy Coach Jack Curran said. “That’s the way we expect to play. Today, we finished [the game].”
The Stanners blew late leads in each of their previous two defeats, but against the Ravens, they owned the fourth quarter, 23-14. “We were pumped up,” reserve Freddie Dorgler said. “We had to win a game. We just played well and it all came together at the end.”
The Iona-bound guard Milan Prodanovic led Molloy with a game-high 23 points and Rocco Rubino added 17 but it was the triumvirate of Kevin Garlan, Lionel Hilaire and Dorgler that made the difference. The three reserves combined for 28 points and five steals, making every hustle play down the stretch.
“I got to tip my hat to them,” Prodanovic said.
“We had to get a little quickness in there,” said Curran, explaining why he went to his three bench players for so long. “It was nice to see them play well.”
Halting a
14-5 Ravens run late in the third quarter with five consecutive points, Dorgler made the biggest contribution, with 15 points and five rebounds. His mini-run erased St. Raymond’s last lead of the game, and ignited a 19-8 run that put the Stanners up nine, midway through the fourth quarter. Dorgler, in fact, capped the spurt when he scored inside.
Later, Garlan, who added six points and nine rebounds, put the finishing touches on the win, tipping in his own miss, giving Molloy (10-7, 2-5 CHSAA AA East) a 67-56 lead with less than two minutes to go. “It shows we’re maturing as a team,” Prodanovic said. “We’re just getting better running our plays.”
