Questions & Answers With The Mayor

Sidewalk bicyclist

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
My Astoria neighbors and I would appreciate enormously anything you could do to rid our Astoria sidewalks (Broadway, etc.) of bicycle riders, mostly messengers, from using our sidewalks as bicycle lanes. They are absolutely a danger to our heavy sidewalk population.
I have complained to police (114th Precinct). Their response is &#8220No, we don't bother them” or &#8220They are very hard to catch.”
I presume this is a lost cause - unless, you can help, puleeeeze.
Sincerely,
Stanley Rygor
Astoria

Dear Stanley:
Thank you for your message regarding bicyclists on sidewalks in the Astoria area. You are right that they pose a danger to pedestrians. The presence of cyclists on our sidewalks also affects quality of life and should not be tolerated.
After reading your message I reached out to the 114th Precinct to step up their presence on Broadway and other main thoroughfares in Astoria in order to strengthen enforcement of such bicyclist infractions. Everyone needs to get where they are going, and bikes are a smart mode of transport; but they do not belong on our sidewalks. Thanks again for writing.
Sincerely,
Mayor Mike Bloomberg

Fix JFK roads!

Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
I would like to know when the Linden Blvd. and Atlantic Ave. roads to JFK will be fixed?
Sincerely
Dalton Rowe

Dear Dalton:
Thank you for your message. Quality of life is one of my top priorities, and that includes keeping our roads in good repair. Both Atlantic Avenue and Linden Boulevard, on the way to JFK Airport, are scheduled for capital improvements, including repaving and resurfacing, starting in the coming summer of 2007. The winter months can be rough on our roads, so if we started the work now, we would likely have to fix things again in a few months. But come warmer weather, we'll be out there improving the roadway. That's good news for New Yorkers and visitors alike. Thanks again for writing.

Sincerely,
Mike Bloomberg
