Jewish Comedy Tour Brings Laughter to North Shore Towers

Close to 300 people filled Towers on the Green on Friday, July 24 for an evening of laughter and fun.

The NY Hysterical Society presented The Jewish Comedy Tour, which was produced by North Shore Towers resident Bernie Furshpan, who also served as the show’s MC. An hour before the show even began, residents were lined up waiting to get in, Furshpan said.

Furshpan explained that the tour “is a revival of an old style of comedy that is based on Jewish suffering that actually evolved about 100 years ago in the Lower East Side.”

“Jewish audiences love this kind of humor,” said Furshpan, who was formerly in chiropractic practice who had always dreamed of being in comedy. He added, “I sort of grew up with this comedy.”

The recent show at the Towers was headlined by Jessica Kirson, who has performed in many comedy festivals and has appeared on numerous television shows. In addition, the MAC Association named her “Best Female Comic” in New York City.

During the performance, Kirson was joined by Simona Nabatov and Mike Jacobs. Nabatov has been inspired by her Russian Jewish background and did impersonations during the show. Jacobs, who was a finalist in the 2009 NYC Funniest Jewish Comedian Contest, “did his modern day twist on Jewish misery.”

This marked the first time that The Jewish Comedy Tour had performed at North Shore Towers. Furshpan said that he hopes there will be other performances at the Towers as well.

“I would love to do another show here,” he said. “It’s a great location, it’s a beautiful room and they filled it up with 300 seats.”

Furshpan also said that the residents of North Shore Towers made for a “wonderful audience.”
