David Weprin chosen to run for Weiner’s seat

Assemblymember David Weprin will be the Democratic candidate in the race to fill Anthony Weiner’s former congressional seat.
According to NY1, Democratic leaders tapped Weprin to run for the vacant seat in the Ninth Congressional district that covers parts of Queens and Brooklyn and will file the paperwork tomorrow.
Weprin represents the 24th Assembly District in northeastern Queens. He was elected by special election in February 2010. Before serving in the assembly, Weprin represented the 23rd Council District for eight years.
The special election for Weiner’s seat is set for September 13. The winner will serve out the rest of the term which ends in 2012. After that, the district may be eliminated due to population shifts in the past census.
A Republican candidate has not yet been named, though Phil Ragusa, chair of the Queens County Republican Party, said that both he and Brooklyn chair Craig Eaton are currently screening potential candidates and that they might have a decision by Friday, July 8.
