Dwight “Doc” Gooden, one of the most feared and celebrated pitchers of the 1980’s, a three-time world series champion and member of the Mets Hall of Fame will be in attendance at the first annual Douglaston Community Day – a celebration for Douglaston residents and the one-year anniversary of Strawberry’s Sports Grill. He joins former Mets Barry Lyons, Kevin Mitchell, Terry Leach and, of course, host Darryl Strawberry for the Saturday, August 13 festivities.
Other guest appearances include two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants Sean Landeta, former N’Sync member and television personality Joey Fatone, 1050 ESPN radio hosts Ryan Ruocco and Robin Lundberg and the sounds of 103.5 KTU all day long. Councilmember Dan Halloran – who will also be in attendance – recently wrote a letter of congratulations and support for Strawberry’s Sports Grill and the first annual community day.
“In just a year, Strawberry’s has become a regular stop for families, sports fans, and LIRR commuters,” said Halloran. “By offering good food at a reasonable price, they’ve etched out an important place in the Douglaston community. Here’s to one great year and many more.”
The community day will include food provided by Strawberry’s, a dunk tank, batting cages, fast-pitch radar gun, mini-basketball and much more. All proceeds will benefit the Darryl Strawberry Foundation’s fight against autism and other community charities.
Current sponsors include the Douglaston Chamber of Commerce, Modell’s Sporting Goods, 1050 ESPN Radio, the New York Mets, Coors Light, Capital One, The Queens Courier, Star Subaru, The New York Daily News and more. Raffles and contests will be held every 30 minutes for prizes including Mets tickets, memorabilia and gift cards.
There is still time to donate gifts, money or your time to the Douglaston Community Day on August 13 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. outside Strawberry’s Sports Grill located at 42-15 235th Street.
