Meet the new editor of North Shore Towers Courier

Melissa Chanresized

On my first assignment to North Shore Towers, I was greeted at the gate by a friendly concierge. He asked me if I had ever been here before — although my GPS and bewildered eyes had already answered for me. I said no, and he handed me a map, directions that went right over my head and a smile, as I began my voyage to an unknown site called “Towers on the Green.”

But I didn’t expect to receive the generous amount of kindness and help that greeted me at the door. It came from Tower residents. We walked side by side to the auditorium as if we had known each other for decades, and the surprising thing was that I received the same, unrelenting friendliness throughout the night from each resident I spoke to.

So when I had learned that longtime North Shore Towers Courier editor Jessica Lyons was leaving her post for bigger and greener pastures in California, I wasn’t as terrified as I thought I would be to take over the reigns.

From the greens of the 18-hole golf course to the indoor shopping arcade and restaurant, I look forward to being a part of the 110 acres of land that Towers residents call home. I have heard — and of course read — remarkable tales of residents’ past, and I would love to learn more about their equally as interesting present.

My story isn’t as captivating as Tower residents’, but just so you know a little more about me, I was born and raised in Fresh Meadows, but I spent a huge portion of my college life in Long Island, where I recently graduated from Adelphi University with a double degree in Journalism and English. Before I began working full-time as a reporter for The Queens Courier, I wrote for Patch.com, Newsday, News 12 Long Island and the Long Island Press. And before that, I was writing and illustrating children’s books — only I was 10 years old and my publications were only circulated to my mother.

If you see me around, feel free to say hello. You can also call me at 718-224-5863, Ext. 221, or email me at [email protected] to discuss things that are relevant to your community or just to chat. I look forward to hearing your stories and covering your community.
