As you go about your day, we implore you to stop for a moment and think — just once — of all the freedoms we have here in the United States.
Now take a second to think of what life would be like without those liberties.
And finally, stop and say “thank you” — to all the brave servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may all enjoy our freedom.
This year Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 28, and as you bask in the sun and enjoy the unofficial start of summer, remember those who died in all of America’s wars.
During Memorial Day Weekend, from Douglaston to Maspeth, College Point to Howard Beach and many other communities in between, thousands of people – young and old – will turn out to march in and watch the Memorial Day parades around the borough.
They will salute our flag as it passes by at the different parades to pay respect to our current U.S. military members, veterans and especially for those who lost their lives fighting for the United States of America in foreign lands.
We owe these men and women a debt of gratitude.
And those brave soldiers returning home deserve not only our respect, but the best in terms of help and services.
There is a whole new generation of Armed Forces who have given their lives and limbs in service to this country. They are fighting the War on Terrorism overseas, so that we may live in peace and freedom here.
As more and more troops come back to the United States, we need to find ways of welcoming them home and demonstrating that we are grateful for their service.
Memorial Day should serve as a day when we say thank you to the service members and veterans we know from our personal lives and show them that we care.
We say a prayer for our fallen and salute our military, today and always.
