Augusta admits first women members — Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore

For the first time in its 80-year history, a female will be able to tee off at the historic Augusta National Golf Club as a member.

The golf club in Augusta, Georgia announced today that it welcomed two female members — Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore — to the previously all-male club.

“These accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well known and respected by our membership. It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their green jackets when the Club opens this fall,” Billy Payne, chairman of Augusta National Golf Club said in a statement.

Rice, the former Secretary of State, and Moore, a South Carolina investment banker, both accepted the invite to join the club.

The home of the Masters had previously been involved in controversy over its admission policy banning women.

“This is a significant and positive time in our Club’s history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family,” said Payne.
