Two pedestrians fatally hit in Elmhurst; driver taken into custody

Two men are dead after a vehicle jumped the sidewalk and struck them in Elmhurst Monday morning.

The 22-year-old driver was travelling westbound on Queens Boulevard near Broadway around 7:30 a.m. when he lost control of his car, hit a phone booth, lamp post, and two parked cars, then went onto the sidewalk, striking two pedestrians, said police.

One of the victims, 59-year-old Man Chit Cheng, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second, 41-year-old Mu Wang Lin, was transferred to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver was taken to Elmhurst Hospital with minor injuries and subsequently taken into custody, said cops. As of late Monday morning, charges were pending and the investigation is ongoing.
