Pedestrian struck and killed by car in Long Island City

A 54-year-old man was fatally struck by a car at the corner of Van Dam Street and Starr Avenue in Long Island City Wednesday night.

Walking across a busy street proved fatal for a 54-year-old man who was hit by a car at a Long Island City intersection on Wednesday night, police reported.

The accident occurred at 9:21 p.m. at the corner of Van Dam Street and Starr Avenue.

According to police, the victim was walking across Van Dam Street from west to east in the marked crosswalk when he was hit by a 2007 Pontiac G5, operated by a 20-year-old male, traveling southbound on Van Dam Street.

Officers from the 108th Precinct and EMS units responded to the scene and found the victim with severe head and leg trauma. He was rushed to Cornell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. His identity was withheld by police pending family notification.

No charges have been filed against the driver, and an investigation is ongoing.
