Two people were arrested Sunday for a Whitestone carjacking that left an 84-year-old man assaulted in his own driveway on New Year’s Day, according to authorities.
Police said the elderly man was about to move the red 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt from his driveway on Willets Point Boulevard when two individuals, whom he believed to be black males, approached asking for directions to the nearest train station at about 9:30 p.m on Jan. 1.
One of the men then struck the victim in the face — causing a laceration to his lip — and then the suspects fled in an unknown direction with the vehicle and the man’s wallet.
The man was treated by EMS on the scene and later taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens Hospital for his injuries. According to a Facebook post by a female family member, he suffered from a fracture on the right side of his face and received 15 stitches on his lip.
Cops later found the vehicle during an unrelated investigation of gunfire in the vicinity of Albany Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn.
Jamel White, 30, and Quiana Hodges, 17, were reportedly in the vehicle at this time and the arresting officer began to pursue the pair after observing them disobey a stop sign at Albany Avenue and Decatur Street.
Although White and Hodges fled when the officer attempted to pull them over to the side of the road — even going so far as to drive the wrong way down a one-way street during the chase — they were eventually apprehended less than two miles away.
White was charged with multiple criminal and traffic violations as a result of the incident, including grand larceny, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of stolen property, fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, reckless driving and driving wrong the wrong way on a one-way street.
Hodges was charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
