And so begins the race to Election Day.

Flushing Assemblyman Ron Kim kicked off his 2016 reelection bid by hosting a D.C. fundraiser attended by several congress members and local leaders.

Local Congresswoman Grace Meng attended the event, along with Congressman Mike Honda and Mark Takano of California and Hawaii Congressman Mark Takai.

Kim has lately been heavily involved in advocating for the rights of a community of nail salon owners who have come under fire for allegedly withholding wages from employees and other workplace abuses. Kim has charged that legal reforms meant to deal with these issues are too harsh on small businesses and that business which do adhere to labor laws have been unfairly targeted as a result of the corrective measures.

He said that while he has focused on pushing back against discriminatory state law enforcement toward mom-and-pop small business owners, he will reach out to communities around the country in the next year to advance shared values in government.

“I realized that in order for me to become a stronger voice and advance solutions that will uplift, not cripple, hard-working members of our community, I need to build a larger coalition of supporters around the country,” Kim said.

Kim currently serves on several committees in the State Assembly, including education, housing, social services, children and families, government operations and corporations, authorities and commissions.

He also chairs the New York Assembly Task Force of New Americans.
