Two individuals were critically injured; an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s and her health aide were on the first floor of the building when the fire erupted. The two women were removed from the home and brought to New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Five other people suffered minor injuries related to smoke inhalation and were taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

The woman’s husband, who is in his 90s, resides on the second floor.

Firefighters rescued a family with two adults and two children, who were living in an upper floor apartment, through the rear of the building.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
