Shop until you drop across Queens on Wednesday, Aug. 17, and celebrate National Thrift Store Day!

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and its donateNYC program are urging New Yorkers to shop second-hand first this Thrift Store Day by partnering with more than 60 nonprofit thrift stores and local vintage shops throughout the city and running an interactive giveaway.

On Aug. 17 DSNY and donateNYC want first-time thrift store shoppers, as well as veteran shoppers to help out their local thrift shops by purchasing used goods and by donating their own lightly used items.

The first Thrift Store Day in New York City was organized by donateNYC in 2013 as a way to encourage second-hand shopping and to increase the public’s awareness of the benefits of reusing materials by reducing waste, conserving resources and creating more jobs. It is also a great way for customers to save some money, and it helps support local businesses.

There are five locations throughout Queens that are partnering with donateNYC for National Thrift Store Day. Those stores are as follows:

  • The Salvation Army located at 39 -11 61st St. in Woodside;
  • The Salvation Army at 34-02 Steinway St. in Long Island City;
  • The Hour Children’s Shop located at 25-22 34 Ave. in Long Island City;
  • The Hour Children Corner Thrift located at 12-10 36th Ave. in Long Island City; and
  • Big Reuse 3-17 26th Ave. in Astoria.

In order to participate in this year’s Thrift Store Day interactive giveaway on Twitter and Instagram, participants must follow @donateNYC and tag photos of their best thrift store finds with #ThriftStoreDay for a chance to win prizes from donateNYC partner organizations.

DonateNYC was designed to make finding and donating second-hand goods easier for all New Yorkers by providing residents with a website and mobile app to help them search by material and location to find the most convenient place to give or find reusable goods. DonateNYC also works in support of NYC’s nonprofit reuse sector through its donateNYC partnership program, joining forces with organizations such as thrift stores, clothing banks, social service providers, creative arts programs and community-based reuse programs.
