Police have arrested a Bayside man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a neighborhood cafe earlier this month.

Law enforcement sources said Alberto Caballero, 38, of 194th Street allegedly took advantage of an open door and an insecure safe at The Oasis Cafe located at 196-30 Northern Blvd. at 3:25 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 11.

According to authorities, the suspect entered the cafe through an open rear door. Once inside, police said, the burglar gained entry into a locked room and stole from an unsecured safe $26,000 in cash and another $4,000 in checks. He then fled the scene in an unknown direction.

The incident was reported to the 111th Precinct. Following an investigation, detectives tracked down Caballero and charged him with burglary. Arraignment details were not immediately available.
