Roman Gorbunov faces 25 years to life in prison for beating his mother to death and dumping her body in a lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park two weeks ago.

The 21-year-old Rego Park man who bludgeoned his mother to death and dumped her body in a lake inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park two weeks ago faces 25 years to life in prison for the heinous crime.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said that Roman Gorbunov was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court in front of Judge Peter Vallone on Saturday, Oct. 8, and was charged with second-degree murder, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence and concealment of a human corpse.

According to the criminal complaint provided by the Queens DA’s office, Gorbunov got into an argument with his mother, Lyubov Gorbunova, 58, inside of her Rego Park apartment on Sept. 27. It is alleged that during the argument Gorbunov struck his mother in the head with a plate, then proceeded to attack her with a blunt instrument, fatally wounding her.

Gorbunov then allegedly put his mother’s body into a bodybag and then into a garbage can. He called a car service to bring him and the garbage can to Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where he allegedly deposited the body into Willow Lake.

Police discovered the body in the lake on the morning of Oct. 8.

Gorbunov is being held without bail, and is expected to return to court on Oct. 21.

Detectives from the 112th Precinct were joined by the Queens Homicide North Detective Squad in investigating this crime.
