Fans of King of Falafel will soon be able to enjoy Freddy Zeideia’s version of falafel and shawarma in Long Island City, Long Island and Brooklyn.
Zeideia opened the first King of Falafel food truck in April 2002 in Astoria and a brick-and-mortar store in January 2016. The food truck serves chicken and beef shawarma, falafel, several combination platters and soup, while the restaurant at 30-15 Broadway.
Now, Zeideia will operate a food truck near the 59th Street Bridge in Long Island City. The food truck will not be mobile and will look more like a trailer according to the king of falafel.
The chef said he is expanding “because people want falafel and shawarma and I gotta get that name out there because Long Island City is really getting crowded out there with the new office buildings.”
He will also open additional food trucks and a brick-and-mortar location on Long Island and Brooklyn. Zeideia declined to reveal the exact locations but some of the food trucks will be near college campuses. His food truck on Ditmars in Astoria and Manhattan locations on 53rd Street and Park Avenue attract Long Island residents and this spurred his decision to expand there, he said.
“For so long I wanted to expand and I couldn’t pick up a better month than November to start, so hopefully by Black Friday I will be adding another mobile food truck in LIC close to the 59 Street bridge and then over to Long Island within few months after that,” he said in a Facebook post.
By then end of next summer, he will operate five new locations. The Long Island City food truck will begin operating by the end of November. He’ll also make it easier for customers to order from several locations with a mobile food app.
The app will resemble the on-the-go Dunkin Donuts app where customers can order food a few blocks away and quickly pick it up by the time they get to the truck.
