A new restaurant in Long Island City that specializes in tacos is doing things a little differently.

Unico Global Tacos, located at 31-31 Thomson Ave., officially opened on Feb. 20 and offers tacos, enchiladas and burritos with fillings inspired by popular flavors in a number of cities. The restaurant is owned by Michelin-starred Chef Suvir Saran and restaurateur Roni Mazumdar, who also co-own the restaurant Tapestry in Greenwich Village.

Saran incorporates ingredients popular in Peru, Korea, Mexico, India and more. “Lima” features shrimp marinated in citrus with jicama-mango-cabbage slaw and chile oil; “Inchon” incorporates flavors of the Korean peninsula with marinated beef, spicy kimchi and gochuchang salsa; “Shimla” includes Indian ingredients and combines roasted potatoes and bell peppers, kachumbar and raita; “Oxford” features flavors from England including southern fried chicken, cabbage-herb slaw, mashed taters and salsa Mexicana.

Tacos start at $3, enchiladas are $3.50 and wraps and Unico bowls cost $8. The restaurant also offers combo specials that include a choice of two tacos or two enchiladas with black rice and masala beans or any wrap or Unico bowl with chips and salsa for $9. 95.

The restaurant also serves drinks native to Mexico, like Jarritos and Thums Up, the Indian version of Coca-Cola.

Patrons can also try these tacos at Tapestry in Greenwich Village. Saran will open a taco menu at the bar where the tacos from Unico Global Taco will be served for $7.
