Police have arrested a man for hitting a cyclist in Sunnyside on April 1 and fleeing the scene.

According to police, 25-year-old Cristian Guiracocha of Woodside was driving a 2002 Ford Escape southbound on 39th Street at 2:53 a.m. on Saturday. The cyclist, identified as Gelasio Reyes of Corona, was traveling at the intersection of 39th Street and 43rd Avenue when he was hit.

Police arrived on the scene to find Reyes lying unconscious on the roadway. They transported him to Elmhurst Hospital when he was pronounced dead. Reyes was a father of three children including a 1-month-old baby, NY1 reported.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, police searched the area after the accident and found the perpetrator in his vehicle at 58th Place and Laurel Hill Boulevard a few hours later.
