Southeast Queens neighborhoods will undergo spraying next week to kill mosquitoes

The city’s ongoing war on mosquitoes turns its attention to southeast Queens next week.

The Health Department will be spraying pesticide across parts of Queens will undergo on Tuesday night, Aug. 8 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning in an effort to eradicate mosquitoes that may carry the West Nile Virus. No human cases have been reported, but infected mosquitoes have been found in samples that the Health Department collected.

Trucks will be spraying an area generally bounded on the west by the Van Wyck Expressway; on the north by Linden Boulevard, 204th Street and Murdock Avenue to the north; on the east by 221st Street, 118th Avenue, 234th Street, 135th  Avenue, Hook Creek Boulevard and 249th Street; and on the south by 147th  Avenue, 225th Street, the Long Island Rail Road, 137th Avenue and Rockaway Boulevard.

The neighborhoods that will be affected by the spraying include Brookville, Cambria Heights, Laurelton, Rosedale, St. Albans, South Jamaica, South Ozone Park and Springfield Gardens.

The Health Department says that they will use “low concentrations of Anvil® 10+10” which when properly used, does not harm humans. However, residents are still encouraged to take proper precautions.

If possible, stay indoors. The spray may aggravated the conditions of people with asthma or other respiratory ailments. Air conditioners may stay on, but vents should be in the closed position to prevent possible exposure to the pesticide. Anything left outside during spraying should be thoroughly washed with soap and water before reuse.
