Police are investigating the death of a man whose vehicle slammed into a parked tractor trailer on the Long Island Expressway service road in Maspeth on Tuesday afternoon.

At 1:38 p.m. on Aug. 8, officers from the 104th Precinct responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision at the westbound Queens Midtown Tunnel Expressway near Mazeau Street. Upon their arrival, police found 27-year-old man Kevin Hurtes, of Westbury, in a white 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with trauma to the head and body.

EMS responded to scene and declared Hurtes dead at the location.

A preliminary investigation found that the victim was driving westbound on the Queens Midtown Tunnel Expressway in the Jeep when the vehicle hit the back of the tractor-trailer. An individual inside of the tractor-trailer at the time of the crash was not injured.

Trucks have been parked along this stretch of road for years, using it at a rest stop to sleep. But it's at the base of a highway exit, very dangerous for those not familiar with it. The city needs to stop this behavior - it's also bad along stretches of the Clearview.
