The intersection of 36th Avenue and 12th Street

Detectives are searching for the driver of a luxury vehicle that struck and critically injured a 59-year-old bicyclist at an Astoria intersection on Thursday night, police reported.

Law enforcement sources said the incident occurred at 10:47 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the corner of 12th Street and 36th Avenue.

According to authorities, the bicyclist was pedaling northbound along 12th Street when he was hit by a white Mercedes-Benz vehicle traveling westbound on 36th Avenue.

The Mercedes-Benz driver stopped nearby and fled the scene on foot, while a passenger inside the vehicle remained at the location, police noted.

Officers from the 114th Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident. Paramedics rushed the bicyclist to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital in critical condition. Detectives took the Mercedes-Benz passenger into custody for questioning.

As of Friday morning, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
