The Shoppes at 36th in Astoria will take over a former nightclub.

An Astoria club that was shut down after repeatedly violating several city codes will be transformed into a retail hub by its new owners.

Transition Acquisitions purchased the one-story property that used to house Club Purlieu at 36-04 34th St. and is looking to attract restaurants, coffee shops and other “high-end” retailers, according to Jeremy Scholder, senior associate at CBRE, the company that handles leasing.

Calling 36th Avenue Astoria’s “restaurant row,” Scholder said he is in discussion with “trendy restaurant tenants, coffee purveyors and roasters, boutique fitness type tenants and also some of the trendier bar concepts as well.”

Dean Rosenzweig, senior vice president of CBRE, said the owners are aware of the history of the club and want “The Shoppes at 36th” to bring in “something that’s going to resonate with the community in a much more positive way.”

The 6,800-square-foot space will be subdivided into five or six shops that range from 1,200 to 1,400 square feet. Developers are also discussing adding a second floor to the property for community facility space in the form of a daycare center or medical offices, Scholder said.

Leasing has already begun and they expect the construction to be open to the public by summer 2018.

DNAinfo first reported the story.
