Two Sunnyside residents will sell baked goods under the 7 train on Saturday to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Maria.

Ruthy Kirwan and Lindsay Case-Hayes, who are both avid bakers, decided to organize this fundraiser because they felt the United States was not doing enough to help Puerto Rican residents.

“Lindsay and I were just chatting about the disaster in Puerto Rico and we felt that the government wasn’t doing enough at the time,” Kirwan said. “We both love to bake and we just wanted to do something that could reach our community and hopefully make an impact.”

The bake sale will take place underneath the 46th Street stop on the 7 line from 10 a.m. to noon and most items will be $1 to $2. All of the proceeds will go to Unidos Por Puerto Rico, an initiative started by Puerto Rico’s First Lady, Beatriz  Rosselló.

Kirwan is the owner of Percolate Kitchen, a website that helps busy people “get their act together in the kitchen.” Case-Hayes is the owner of Lulu’s Confections, a custom order baking company.

Though both women will put their baking skills to use, they have enlisted the help of other Sunnyside residents and mothers. The Sunny Mom Bake Sale for Hurricane Relief will offer brownies, cookies, cupcakes, cake and gluten-free and vegan desserts baked by several residents.

Kirwan and Case-Hayes are also encouraging people who want to be involved but don’t have time to bake to buy baked goods from local bakeries and bring them to the fundraiser.
