A Maspeth bakery has been temporarily closed by the city’s Health Department following an inspection that resulted in evidence of mice and other critical health code errors.

Glendale Bakeshop & Café, located at 69-25 Grand Ave., underwent an initial operational cycle inspection on Dec. 7. During the inspection, the bakery racked up violation 41 points, resulting in the Health Department ordering the store’s closure.

According to the Health Department, the bakery had a critical violation of evidence of mice or live mice present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas. Additionally, wiping cloths were soiled or not stored in sanitizing solution, which is also considered a critical violation.

Other violations indicated that pesticides were not used in accordance with applicable laws and that the building was not properly vermin-proofed.

“The Glendale Bakeshop & Café was temporarily closed for critical public health hazards that could not be addressed at the time of the inspection, including a mice infestation,” said a representative of the Department of Health in a statement. “Once these issues have been addressed, the restaurant may request a re-opening inspection.”

According to the Health Department website, restaurants are graded on point scale: 0 to 13 points results in an A grade; 14 to 27 points receive a B; and those with 28 or more are given a C. When a restaurant performs poorly during a re-inspection, the Health Department will continue to re-inspect the building roughly once a month until it scores below 28, or the department closes it for serious and persistent violations.

The Glendale Bakeshop & Café was once part of a small chain of bakeries that served the Greater Ridgewood area.

The Maspeth shop is another addition to the restaurants that were shut down due to mouse problems. Rego Park’s Bagelette was recently shut down for similar violations regarding mice on the premises.
