A Middle Village sandwich shop was temporarily shut down after the Health Department found evidence of mice and other critical violations on Tuesday.

Subway, located at 72-64 Metropolitan Ave., underwent an initial operational cycle inspection on Feb. 6. During the inspection, the store racked up violation 43 points, resulting in the Health Department ordering the store’s closure.

According to the Health Department, the inspection found that the Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations, which is a critical violation. The Subway also had evidence of mice in the facility’s food and/or non-food areas as well as evidence that the building was not vermin-proof.

“The Health Department temporarily closed the Subway on 72-64 Metropolitan Ave. because of public health hazards that couldn’t be corrected at the time of the inspection,” said a representative of the Department of Health in a statement. “Critical public health hazards included a vermin infestation, an expired food protection certificate, among other violations . When the restaurant corrects these violations, they may request a reopening inspection.”

According to the Health Department website, restaurants are graded on point scale: 0 to 13 points results in an A grade; 14 to 27 points receive a B; and those with 28 or more are given a C. When a restaurant performs poorly during a re-inspection, the Health Department will continue to re-inspect the building roughly once a month until it scores below 28, or the department closes it for serious and persistent violations.
