TMLA Hilltopper Jordan Nixon

A rising basketball star from a Jamaica Estates school is the recipient of a top statewide award.

Jordan Nixon, a senior at The Mary Louis Academy, has been awarded “2018 Miss New York Basketball” by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. In the fall, she is headed to the University of Notre Dame, where she will continue her women’s basketball career.

Nixon, a point guard for The Mary Louis Hilltoppers, was chosen for the award after two rounds of voting and deliberations by association and media members. The title is widely viewed as the top award that a high school basketball player in New York state can receive.

In January, the high school senior was selected to play in the 2018 McDonald’s All-American game, joining the ranks of basketball legends such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Candace Parker.

This year’s team members were selected from over 700 nominees hailing from schools throughout the country. The game will take place at 5 p.m. on March 28 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta and will air live on ESPN2.

Nixon has also been nominated for Gatorade Player of the Year, the All-USE Team and the All-USA Player of the Year Awards.

The point guard is ranked as the nation’s top wing and the No. 15 point guard in the Class of 2018, according to ESPN.

This season, the Hilltoppers advanced to the varsity semifinals of the Brooklyn-Queens Diocesan Championship, where they were defeated by St. Francis Prep.

Last year, fellow Hilltopper Danielle Patterson was selected to play on the 2017 McDonald’s All American Girls Team. Patterson, a forward, currently plays for Notre Dame; the team is currently competing in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament as the top seed in the Spokane Region.
