Citing a growing membership rate and the need for more space, a Kew Gardens Jewish congregation is hoping to build a new home for itself on Metropolitan Avenue where a single-family house now stands.
The abandoned house at 122-31 Metropolitan Ave. in Kew Gardens is the corner house among a row of frame and brick houses, storefronts and industrial buildings.
The Congregation Adas Yeveim of Kew Gardens, which now owns the property, is planning to demolish the house and build a two-story synagogue and basement in which it plans to accommodate 200 people for Sabbath services, according to plans filed with the city Department of Buildings.
