Until recently drivers stopping at a red light on the corner of Rockaway Boulevard and South Conduit in Springfield Gardens on a late Sunday afternoon might have wondered why there were a few hundred people standing on the center divider and the sidewalks cheering them on.
Then as if out of the blue, two people sitting on high-performance motorcycles appeared, revving their engines. As the light turned green, tires spun and screeched as the bikes took off down Rockaway Boulevard heading south toward the Five Towns in Nassau County.
Motorcycle racing had become a Sunday ritual for bikers from around the metropolitan area until late last spring when Queens legal authorities took drastic action to stop the weekly event.
