Ice rink planned for Flushing Meadows

By Michelle Han

Plans for an indoor pool at Flushing Meadows Corona Park have expanded dramatically since the fall, officials said last week.

Vincent Colangelo, director of capital projects for the Parks Department, said revised plans for the Olympic-size swimming pool complex will now include an indoor ice rink. The new plan calls for an 82,000-square-foot, three-story structure, almost double the size of the initial proposal for a 42,000-square-foot building.

Colangelo made his presentation on the pool and ice rink project to members of Community Board 6, whose jurisdiction includes the area to the southwest of the park, at a meeting June 28.

The pool complex will be at the northeastern area of Flushing Meadows Corona Park at the site of the old Aquacade, Colangelo said. The area is an asphalt stretch of the park that has no designated use, he said.
