Weiner won the Democratic primary Sept. 12 with 73 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results. The first-term incumbent is virtually assured of re-election in November in the heavily Democratic district.
It is not clear whether Dear will continue to campaign at all, although his name still will appear on the ballot as a Republican in the general election. The district includes Forest Hills, Glendale and Rego Park, the Rockaways, and parts of Brooklyn down to Sheepshead Bay.
