Hearty congratulations to P.S. 129's Andrew Mulvey for placing third in the Queens Historical Society Student Art Contest, open to all fourth graders in the borough of Queens. Each contestant had to draw and write about a favorite historic building or site. Andrew drew his church, Saint Fidelis. He won $25, a beautiful plaque and a year's membership in the Society. Andrew's drawing is currently on display at the Historical Society in Flushing and a copy will be hung at Saint Fidelis.

I must have been well rested from vacation, because I beat Greta Hruska who usually bowls over 200. But it must have been her over-tired morning and she made me look good.
A very special event is coming up on Jan. 20 – the Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony at St. Fidelis Auditorium at 8 p.m. It is with a great pride that the Scouts, Leaders and Committee of Troop 18, Boy Scouts of America will be celebrating the Eagle Scout Court of Honor honoring John Haseney, Michael Mahon, Daniel McCloskey and Eric Petersen, as they receive Scouting's highest rank. To reach that level, each scout had to earn 21 merit badges, hold a leadership position in the troop and develop and lead a service project that benefited the community.
The Board of Trade's board of directors addressed the many complaints and primary concerns of the business community at a recent directors meeting. Representing the U.S. Postal Service were its area manager, Robert Inguanta and its customer relations coordinator, Sharon McLawhorn. A major concern was the pick-up time from the postal boxes had been changed to 2 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. However, they said that at the beginning of this year they would go back to the 5 p.m. pick-up. Greg Paccar, representing Tutor Time, a child care/learning center, is opening on Ulmer Street in the College Point Corporate Park. The building occupies 10,296 square feet with 6,300 square feet of outdoor playground for 215 children.
SABINA SAYS: Spending time with my grandsons Eric and Brian is both unique and rewarding.
When I visited them over the holidays in Las Vegas, they were up and dressed by 6 in the morning and immediately asked what were the plans for the day. They went golfing and Eric even got a hole in one. They saw no fewer than nine movies – I'm trying to forget the popcorn calories, but it sure tasted good!
But the highlight was a ride in the airship, Vegas.Com. That is the only way to see Las Vegas. It was smooth and enthralling to see all the sights from the sky and not be overwhelmed from walking around. We were given earphones and told that we could talk, since Chief Pilot Paul Adam said he was connected with the tower Of course, Brian talked the whole hour.
Eric was St. Joseph for the Nativity play and he was truly solemn.
Las Vegas had its first fireworks for New Year's Eve. The display cost $500,000 and lasted only 10 minutes, but everyone liked it and wanted to have an even bigger fireworks show next year.
They now have 11 bowling alleys and we did bowl twice. The unique thing was that you programmed it for children and adults and the bumper guards only went up for the children and down for the adults I told them I could have scored even better if they had left the bumpers up for me, but they wouldn't let me cheat.
Right after the cool mornings, the rest of the days stayed in the 60s.
Then we came home to the snow piles!
