The Association for the Advancement of Blind and Retarded Inc. has received a $27,000 check from Fleet Bank in support of the its newest day program for adults with mental retardation in Jamaica.
The event, part of the New York Child Learning Institute's Anniversary Dinner Dance, was held last month at Terrace on the Park. More than 600 guests attended.
George Andreozzi, vice president of Fleet Bank, and Dominic Cefalu, president of Omni Business Systems, were honored for their support and efforts on behalf of the agency.
Fleet's grant will support the creation of a technology center which will train AABR's highest functioning consumers in basic computer usage. The center, named Wellington Hall, opened in November 2000, and expects to serve 160 people with developmental disabilities.
Cefalu, a founding member of the Knights of York, was honored for ongoing commitment to AABR's New York Child Learning Institute, a school for autistic children in College Point. Through the financial support of Knights of York, the institute was renovated and re-certified.
AABR serves nearly 700 individuals in the metropolitan area through 14 group homes, two day-treatment programs, two thrift stores and a family respite program.
Pfizer Inc., Sportime, and Walgreens Drug Stores will sponsor the Golf and Tennis Classic on May 7 at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, L.I. The event benefits the American Lung Association of Queens, Inc. and the American Lung Association of Nassau-Suffolk, Inc.
