If the Kiwanis Cup is any gauge on how the Bayside girls soccer team will perform in the upcoming PSAL playoffs, then the Commodores are peaking at the right time. Joe Corrado's club defeated Newtown, 2-0 to win the eighth-annual round-robin tournament at Forest Hills Saturday.
The tournament featured eight teams from Queens, including five who are playoff-bound, and each game was played nine-on-nine for 30 minutes. Each team played at least three times.
Kerry-Kay Graham and Emily Andricosky scored for Bayside (11-3 Queens I), which also defeated Bryant, Arts & Business and Forest Hills, in the win over the Pioneers. For Andricosky, it was her sixth goal of the tournament. But she wasn't the tournaments top scorer. That honor belonged to Newcomers Laura Burlacu, who netted tournament-record 10 goals as the Lions finished in third place.
Newtown (13-1 Queens II) defeated Beach Channel, Richmond Hill and Newcomers before falling to Bayside in the final.
Led by Ana Borges and Kamila Barnes, Forest Hills finished fourth, Richmond Hill, Arts & Business, Bryant and Beach Channel placed fifth through eighth.
Bayside takes on either Randolph or Laguardia in a first round playoff game scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Newtown, the Queens II champions, along with Townsend Harris, who captured the Queens I title and Queens III winner Cardozo, who skated through the regular season with a 15-0 record, allowing just one goal against, have first-round byes.
Forest Hills hosts Leon Goldstein in an out bracket game Tuesday. The winner travels to Staten Island to face McKee/Staten Island Tech Thursday. On Wednesday, Bryant hosts Fort Hamilton at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Newcomers takes on Susan Wagner at Flushing Meadows and Jamaica heads to Jefferson Thursday.
Bryant 1, Newtown 0. Diana Botero scored the lone goal as the Owls ruined Newtown's bid for an undefeated league record. Bryant improved to 14-3-1.
Francis Lewis 4, Beach Channel 0. Karine Zuma led the way for Lewis (9-6 Queens I) with two goals and Caroline Verna and Natalia Cortez, who scored on a penalty kick, rounded out the scoring for the Patriots.
Forest Hills 5, Far Rockaway 1. Stephanie Feliciano netted a hat trick and Borges, a junior striker, scored her 78th career high school goal to lead the Rangers (11-9, 8-7 Queens II).
Jamaica 5, NYC Lab 0. Kimone McLughlin scored twice and Roberta Tondreau had a goal and two assists for the Beavers (10-6) in a non-league match.
Cardozo 4, Newcomers 0. Kelly Kaso had two goals for the Judges (15-0 Queens III).
Forest Hills 3, Richmond Hill 1. Borges' three goals led the Rangers.
