The search for bodies continues at the World Trade Center and it now seems that there’s virtually no hope to find anyone alive. Condolences to all those families who have lost a loved one in this horror.
The College Point Memorial Service for Victims of the World Trade Center Disaster will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 at MacNeil Park on Poppenhusen Avenue between College Place and 115th Street. Bring chairs and an American flag. We want all people, organizations, schools and churches to participate. It is important that we all assemble to pay homage to the victims and honor the dedicated rescue workers. We must unite our love and togetherness for a brighter future. On Sept. 16, members, relatives and friends of the VFW 885 and American Legion marched to MacNeil Park for a candlelight Memorial Service. About 300 people joined in for prayers and songs. Ann Marie Murphy and the VFW planned the program to honor the victims of the World Trade Center. Commander Jim Reilly and Senator Padavan delivered talks to those present.
The Police Officer Gabe Vitale Memorial 5K Road Race and Children’s Fun run which was to be held on Sunday, Sept. 30 has been canceled due to the WTC disaster. This will be re-scheduled for next year.
Our thanks again to Verizon who volunteered to put our American flags back up on the light poles on College Point Boulevard. The very sad note is that 11 of these flags were stolen. They are now under surveillance and anyone trying to steal them will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. People who do such a thing are only helping the terrorists’ evil mission.
Congratulations to Samantha DeMonte and Kyle Sauer, students of P.S. 129 in College Point, who won a citywide writing contest for writing and illustrating their own book in the annual Ezra Jack Keats competition. They were the winners in the elementary school category.
There will be a live-music benefit starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at University Center, Adelphi University, Garden City, L.I. $10 per person, $8 with student ID (food will be served). All of the proceeds go to the World Trade Center victims’ families and will be matched by the Robert McCormick Tribune Foundation. The annual Queens County Fair held at the Queens County Farm Museum was quite a delight. There was pig racing, rides and midway, children’s rides, country western music and dance and German and Irish bands and dance. Crafts vendors, blue ribbon competition, exhibits, Colonial living demonstrations, Con Edison Ecology Exhibit and Senator Frank Padavan with a display of folders and a voting machine for the present major problems. He also had copies of the beautiful American flag and a poem honoring the American flag.

My grandsons Eric and Brian bring joy and most assuredly help to lighten the outside grief. Brian, 7, told me on the telephone the other night that he had gotten in trouble at school, so I asked him if he had been talking when he shouldn’t have. He said that the girl in back of him had kissed him and he turned around and told her not to do that. The funny part was that the teacher sent the note home to the girl’s house. I can imagine how irresistible he will be when he is a little bit older. He may take after me with the talking, though…
