President George W. Bush announced Monday the nomination of state Inspector General Roslynn R. Mauskopf as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, which covers Queens.
The White House press office said the nomination was also sent the same day to the U.S. Senate for conformation. There is no time limit on when the conformation proceedings will end.
If confirmed by the Senate, Mauskopf will replace Alan Vinegrad, who was the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District. Vinegrad, who was appointed by Bush June 1, replaced Loretta Lynch.
Mauskopf joined Gov. George Pataki’s administration as the state’s inspector general in 1995. Before moving up to Albany, Mauskopf was a prosecutor for Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau. She served in Morgenthau’s office from 1982 until 1995. During her tenure with the DA’s office, she was deputy chief of special prosecutions and chief of the Frauds Bureau.
Pataki appointed Mauskopf to a commission that investigated allegations of inflated attendance records in the New York City school system as well as waste and abuse in school construction projects, according to published reports,
Mauskopf is a 1979 graduate of Brandeis University and earned her law degree at Georgetown University in 1982.
The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District covers Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island Nassau and Suffolk County.
