The Mary Louis Academy captured the CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens championship Tuesday afternoon, defeating Bishop Kearney, 5-0, advancing to the start playoffs at Hofstra University Tuesday.
The Hilltoppers, now 25-3, were led by starting pitching Stephanie Gozdziewski, who struck out seven while picking up the complete-game shutout victory. Kearney managed just three hits in the game.
Gozdziewski raised her own record this year to 15-0 in guiding Mary Louis to its first Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan championship since the 1999 season. She also helped out on offense, driving in Erin Breen with a two-out double in the first inning. Jen Flynn’s single then drove in Elizabeth Strein and Gozdziewski to put the Hilltoppers up 3-0 in the top of the first.
Runs in the fourth and the seventh capped the scoring for Mary Louis. Kearney’s best chance to score came in the fifth when Caitlin Morch was tagged out at the plate to end the threat.
The Mary Louis Academy 6, St. Francis Prep 2. The Hilltoppers edged their arch-rivals the Terriers in the semifinals of the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan tournament Thursday, as Stephanie Gozdziewski recorded nine Ks to keep the potent Prep offense at bay. Offensively, Jen Flynn was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBIs and Erin Breen was had three hits and three RBIs. Mary Louis improved to 22-3 overall and 13-0 in league action.
