A Monarch butterfly walk is being held in Fort Tilden, Gateway National Recreation Area on Sunday in conjunction with “All A-Flutter,” an exhibition of stunning color photographs of Long Island and rain forest butterflies in their natural habitats now at sTudio 6 Gallery in Fort Tilden.
The walk, led by Park Ranger and butterfly expert Don Riepe, will meet at noon at sTudio 6 Gallery. It will take 1-2 hours and will cover approximately 1-1/2 miles. The route will include Hawk Watch atop Battery Harris East and the Fort Tilden beach along Dune Road. Monarchs and other migrating butterfly species will be observed.
Afterwards, participants may view the “All A-Flutter” exhibition. Exhibition and walk are free and are presented by Rockaway Artists Alliance in partnership with Gateway National Recreation Area. These photographs of RAA nature photographers Holly Gordon, Laura M. Eppig and Kathleen Hervey will be displayed at Fort Tilden through Sept. 22. Free admission. Gallery hours: Saturdays noon-5 p.m., Sundays 1-4 p.m.
Through arrangements by the Rockaway Artists Alliance, Gordon, Eppig and Hervey will present “All A-Flutter,” a slide show/lecture and a small exhibition of butterfly photographs at the New York Hall of Science this month. These will accompany the hall’s month of “Bugged Out Science Weekends” events. The slide show will reveal such fascinating stories as, the magic moment a Blue Morpho butterfly was captured (photographically) sitting on a colleague’s finger. The slide show/lecture takes place Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Auditorium. The exhibition runs from Saturday through Sept. 22 in the Technology Gallery.
