Nick Hamilton-Lopez led the Monsignor McClancy boys’ basketball team to three wins in four games last week, including the first two league wins of the season for the Crusaders.
Hamilton-Lopez was the catalyst in his team’s 70-61 upset win over the St. Francis Prep Terriers Friday. The left-handed guard out of Middle Village scored 32 points on seven field goals, including five from long-range, and hitting 3-of-4 from the line.
He scored 16 in a league loss to All Hallows last Thursday and only scored 8 against Holy Cross earlier in the week, but he played a super floor game against the Knights to help secure his team’s first win of the CHSAA season.
On Feb. 9, Hamilton-Lopez led the suddenly hot Crusaders with 18 as McClancy defeated St. John Vianney in a non-league game, marking the team’s first victory since Dec. 18, when it defeated St. John the Baptist in a non-league tournament, 77-67.
“He’s having a great junior year for us,” said McClancy coach Don Kent.
Bryant wrestler Christian Arbelaez won the 145-pound PSAL championship Sunday, pinning Jahmane Noel from FDR in 2:39. Teammates Almir Pupovic, also a standout on the football team, won the 189-pound crown by pinning Far Rockaway’s Andre Green in 20 seconds, and John Kardoulias was the 275-pound winner, pinning LIC’s Francisco Paulino in 2:26 … Long Island City wrestler David Mercado won the 152-pound championship by pinning Lehman’s Emmanuel Kwan in 5:54 … Brian Williams scored a career-high 27 points to pace the Christ the King Royals against Bishop Loughlin … Marlon Smith went over the 1,000-point mark for his career with 20 against Bishop Loughlin last week … Beach Channel point guard Victor Alvarez was spectacular against Jamaica in a first-round PSAL playoff game last Thursday. He scored a career-high 22 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 from three, to lift the Dolphins to a 63-47 victory … Cameron Tyler had 24 points and teammate Skyler Khaleel added 13 points and 16 rebounds for Cardozo in an 80-53 rout of Park West in the first round of the PSAL playoffs … Ally Zarate’s two free throws with 12 seconds left sent the game into overtime and two more free throws with five seconds left in the extra session clinched the win for the Newtown girls’ basketball team in a first-round PSAL ‘B’ playoff game. Teammate Maria Loor scored 23 points in the 48-45 win over Baruch College H.S. … Jackie Butler also had the flair for the dramatic Friday in a 50-47 win over Chelsea. She scored 13 points and had 7 rebounds, but she scored the shot of the game, converting the game-winning old-fashioned three-point play with 12 seconds left in regulation. Katreem “The Dream” Palmer led the Beach Channel girls’ basketball team to an easy first-round win over Wingate by scoring a game-high 38 points.
