Belmont Fair to host arm-wrestling competition

Spectators are invited to watch the muscles ripple Sunday as the Belmont Stakes Fair and New York Arm Wrestling Association present the 23rd Annual Long Island Open Arm Wrestling Championships. The event will be held on the main stage at the Belmont Stake

Registration and weigh-in begin at noon and the start time is 1:30 p.m. There are 10 weight classes for men, including the Masters 45+ and the seniors 60+. There also will be three weight classes for women. Entry fee is $15 for NYAWA members and $20 for nonmembers. General admission is $6 for adults and children. Parking is $4 at Gate 5.

This is an open event for professionals and amateurs where anyone can compete, regardless of age, sex, weight, dexterity or experience. This event will feature the Long Island Arm Wrestling Team and “the amazing Fortuna Family: Dan, Dina and Amanda from Wading River, L.I.,” plus teams with top talent from all five boroughs, upstate and the tri-state area.

Custom NYAWA gold, silver and bronze medals and certificates will be given for first, second and third place in each weight class, and a male and female MVP will be crowned. There are no residency requirements, so out-of-towners can compete as well.

The New York Arm Wrestling Association has been dedicated to the promotion of arm wrestling in New York since 1977. This year the NYAWA is celebrating its 26th year anniversary and has a full schedule of events that were to begin on April 29 with the Nassau Community College Arm Wrestling Championships.

May 23 is the Fleet Week all Military USA Team Championships at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in Manhattan. In addition, events will be held in each of the five boroughs as part of the city of New York Parks and Recreation 10-event New York Golden Arm Series, which will culminate in the Empire State Finals on Nov. 13 at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.

The NYAWA has worked closely with many sponsors, charities, civic and community organizations to present arm wrestling events for adults, teens and children of all ages.
