OLBS Lightning strikes Queens, takes home boro championship

The Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament fifth-grade boys’ Novice basketball team won the Queens CYO championship over St. Adalbert’s (Elmhurst), 33-28.

After trailing 17-10 at halftime, the Lightning were able to knot the score at 17 all within the first two minutes of the third period.

The game see-sawed for much of the period until OLBS took charge late in the third and all through the fourth period with their tenacious defense limiting Adalbert’s to just 11 points in the second half.

Justis Bosco took control of the defensive boards and crucial foul shots were made in the fourth period by Mike Katz and Bryan Caffrey.

The backcourt duo of Vincent Guerra and Danny Wagner kept cool and refused to succumb to the full-court pressure of a very good Adalbert’s team.

Off the bench, Joe Vitti and Xeno Vroulos made key contributions after two OLBS starters fouled out of the game. Mike Billik and Kenny Marzocco also had an impact on the Blue Lightning victory.

The Blue Lightning finished their regular season with a 13-1 record and had to win another five playoff games in order to bring home the championship to OLBS.

Kudos also go out to the coaches, Joe Bosco and Lenny Guerra, for their time and effort along with the team’s parents and their family members for their never-ending support.
