Seven-run fifth inning carries Molloy past St. Francis Prep

By Anthony Bosco and Dylan Butler

St. Francis Prep starter Danny Weinman was cruising until Nick Balalis doubled off the fence at Stanner Field, opening up the flood gates on a seven-run fifth inning. The rally was all the offense Molloy would need, winning Monday’s CHSAA league encounter 7-2.

James Lally got the start on the hill for the Stanners and cruised, striking out six and surrendering just two unearned runs in the top of the sixth and picking up the win.

Senior catcher Nick Derba stroked a two-run double during the fifth for the defending CHSAA champs, who improved to 2-0 in league play on the season, which has been delayed by weather.

“We’re playing pretty good,” said Molloy head coach Jack Curran. “We need more games, more at bats. I think everyone is in the same boat. We need a couple weeks of regular play.”
