Two days after belting the game-winning two-run double in the sixth inning of the PSAL ‘B’ softball semifinals at ASA Complex, Lauren Cassidy again found herself at the plate, with the ‘B’ city championship game tied at 5 in the sixth inning with runners in scoring position.
The junior second baseman did it again, smacking a two-run double to left field to lead Forest Hills to its first-ever softball city championship, beating Richmond Hill, 11-6.
“I knew with the bases she had to get the big hit and I told her before that this is the situation she lives for,” said Forest Hills coach Jonas Garelle. “She was extremely confident and belted the ball to left field, it was the hit we needed and we never looked back.”
Michelle Rios of Forest Hills won four matches, 15-5, 21-4, 21-9 and 21-11 to capture the PSAL Queens girls handball singles title Friday. Linna Fang and Zora Sze of Townsend Harris won the doubles title …Molloy pitcher James Lally went the distance, tossing a three-hitter in the Stanners’ 3-2, 10-inning win over Moore Catholic … St. Francis Prep’s Steven Eng also tossed a three-hitter as the Terriers defeated Xavier, 10-1, in playoff action this week … A week after helping lead their team to the Mayor’s Cup team championship, St. Francis Prep’s Martina Featherston and Kathy Sorokko won the Mayor’s Cup individual doubles title, beating Kimberly Goldstein and Afiya Lahens of Cardozo, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 … Cathedral Prep pitcher Kevin McGrath tossed a complete game on just three days rest to lead the Crusaders varsity baseball team to an 8-6 win over Salesian in the CHSAA ‘B’ championship game Friday. He also had two hits and scored three runs in the win.
