To The Point: Stress-reduction program planned at Poppenhusen

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. After two marathon races and a Memorial Day parade, College Point had much to cheer about.

“Keep Them Safe America,” Just Cause Inc. will be at Greenpoint Bank. Free fingerprinting for children will be offered while we help to educate the public about child safety. The dates and times are Thursday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 718-392-8501.

Police Officer Gabriel Vitale 5K Memorial Run and Kid’s Fun Run took place Saturday, May 31, at MacNeil Park in College Point.

The winners are: Overall category – York Munoz, College Point RR 1, 16:59; 14 and under, James Fallon, College Point, 22:51; 15-19, John Monks, 18:15; 20-29, Javier Palma, College Point, 18:42; 30-39, Anthony Meo, 17:34; 40-49, Cesar Estevez, 18:16; 50-59, John Martellucci, 19:03; 60-69, Adolph Rettmer, Alley Pond Smders, 23:45; 70+, Don Preven, 35:54; and Physically Challenged, John Plata, College Point RR, 32:09.

Women – Mary Bogle, Hellgate R.R., 21:32; Mitzi Menendez, College Point RR, 37:50; Ellen Coltrinari, 22:19; Mariel Nino, College Point RR, 22:41; Ximena Rosas, Hellgate R.R., 22:14; Lisa Gonzalez, Quantrum Feet R.R., 22:10; Michelle Nero, 23:20; and Glenda Lascot, Alley Pond Striders, 57:15. The 109th Precinct won the Police Officer Gabe Vitale Perpetual Trophy. Inspector Owen Monaghan of the 109th finished the entire race.

There will be free anger management and stress reduction workshops at the Poppenhusen Institute, at 114-04 14th Rd. on Saturday, July 12, and Saturday, Aug. 2. Anger management will be at 1 p.m. and stress reduction will be at 2 p.m.

There will be monthly stress reduction and anger management workshops for September through December as well, but the dates are undetermined. Reservation is requested. These workshops are facilitated by Project Liberty and funded by FEMA.

Congratulations to Christopher Hoffman as he graduates from St. John’s Lutheran School and begins Martin Luther High School on a scholarship.

The following is the schedule for the Holy Cross High School 2003 Summer Basketball Camp for boys ages 8 to 16: Session 1 is June 23 to June 27, Session 2 is June 30 to July 3, Session 3 is July 7 to July 11, and Session 4 is July 14 to July 18. The Module Youth Program of Northeast Queens will be celebrating its 30th anniversary Sunday, June 22, at 4:30 p.m. The event will be at St. Mel’s R.C. Church, 28-20 154th St., Flushing.

Also at St. Mel’s will be the Diocesan Golden Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. with Bishop Valero presiding.

Appreciation to Jo-Ann Jones for her work at Flushing Town Hall and who is retiring.

Again, much appreciation to all those who worked and were a part of the College Point Memorial Day Parade. Everybody’s efforts made a success.

Sabina says… June 15 is a special day. It is Father’s Day and all children should make it special for dad.
