Men to raise scholarship funds at St. Albans sorority cook-off

By Courtney Dentch

The Queens Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Beta sorority was slated to hold its “Men Who Cook” event Friday to raise money for scholarship awards.

The event will feature men from the Queens community who will don chef hats to dish out a wide range of food. Cooks expected to participate include Dr. Gerald Deas; Harding Brooks, who cooked for President Dwight Eisenhower; and many others, said Charlotte Jefferson, one of the event coordinators.

“These are community men, and we hope people are going to come and eat their good food,” she said.

The proceeds from the evening will go to benefit the chapter’s annual scholarship awards, which will be presented in April, Jefferson said. This is the first year the sorority has hosted the “Men Who Cook” event to fund the scholarships, she said.

The event was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Robert Ross Johnson Family Life Center, 172-17 Linden Blvd. in St. Albans. Admission is $20 a person.
