KEW GARDENS — A St. Albans man was convicted last week of assault, resisting arrest and harassment for biting a police officer in a fight outside Jamaica Hospital Medical Center last summer.
A jury of 10 women and two men found William Hodges, 32, guilty after a one-week trial in state Supreme Court in Kew Gardens. He was acquitted of a criminal mischief charge.
Hodges was arrested after the July 2003 incident outside the hospital that began when a hospital employee asked the agitated Hodges to leave. Police were called when he refused, and Hodges pushed one officer.
As the police tried to place him under arrest, Hodges fought with them and bit Officer Benedict Vitale on the leg.
Hodges was scheduled to be sentenced July 30.
The St. Albans man had previously been charged with shooting a police officer in the leg in 1999, but those charges were dismissed after a judge ruled the prosecution had denied him a speedy trial.
