Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point.
I want to thank everyone who prayed, wished me well and sent beautiful get-well cards. But just about everybody wanted to know when I was going to get back to writing my column, “To the Point.” Well, I agreed with them and I enjoyed writing it as much as they did reading it. So here I am on my return.
I was involved with the College Point Memorial Day Parade and it was beautiful as usual and, of course, the weather was 100 percent perfect. Fred Mazzarello was chairman, along with 1st Division Marshal’s Aides Anne Retundie and Dorothy Urban; Grand Marshal U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley; 2nd Division Marshal’s Aides Rocco Cardali and Rocco D’Erasmo; 3rd Division Marshal’s Aide Eva Mieras; 4th Division Marshal’s Aide Ed Bergold; 5th Division Marshal’s Aide Chris Mancini; and 6th Division Marshal’s Aide Mike Neibauer. The Poppy Queen was Rachel Urban.
Also attending was Mayor Michael Bloomberg, state Sen. Frank Padavan, Borough President Helen Marshall, Councilman Tony Avella, Assemblywoman Nettie Mayersohn, Father Hamilton and Curtis Sliwa and his Guardian Angels. Father Hamilton gave the benediction, and Curtis Sliwa gave the most inspiring speech. The Knights of Columbus hosted the buffet.
In other news, the plan to widen 20th Avenue to relieve traffic congestion would have required the city to take between 10 feet and 20 feet away from the front of homes between the Whitestone Expressway and Parsons Boulevard to relieve congestion from the 20th Avenue exit off the highway. Assemblyman Brian McLaughlin was in Albany working on issues designed to protect our way of life. McLaughlin and Padavan have sponsored legislation to eliminate the tax exemptions that developers get to construct the controversial homes.
“Strut Your Stuff” held its recital June 12 at Queensboro Community College. Of course, I recognized many of the dancers, such as Lisa Ferony, Jim Sensale, Jeannette Smith, Jessica Stillwagon, Rickey Anne Tuttle and teacher Julie Smith. Thank you to Miss Donna, for your dedication to Kid Stuff Preschool Program, and to Maureen Smith, who sees that everything goes well.
The Knights of Columbus, St. Ambrose #1463, held its eighth annual Fr. Peter A. Seeger Golf Tournament at the Clearview Golf Course. There were 28 hole sponsors and 43 boosters. Everyone returned to the Council for a very good buffet.
Boy Scouts Troop 18 held its Eagle Scout Court of Honor, honoring Thomas Arocho, Andrew Jackson, Matthew McCloskey, Daniel Megerdichian and John Mulvey. The event was held at the St. Fidelis School auditorium.
The Rev. Arthur Minichello gave the invocation, and the scoutmaster’s welcome was given by Eddy Petersen, scoutmaster; John Neugebauer, assistant scoutmaster; Brent Good, assistant scoutmaster; Ed Bergold, assistant scoutmaster; Paul Donofrio, assistant scoutmaster; Richard Bazant, assistant scoutmaster; and Eric Petersen, assistant scoutmaster.
