Alyson Walsh likes to lead by example. A former softball player at Queens College, the second-year Stella Maris coach runs and plays with her team during practice.

In her brief time at the helm, the 28-year-old has turned things around for the Lady Flippers, turning the team into one of the better squads in the division.

And she’s done so without the help of assistant coaches.

“Being a woman and coaching girls, it helps them a bit,” Walsh said. “I try and be a positive role model for them.”

After finishing under .500 her first year, Walsh guided Stella Maris to a successful campaign that included a win over powerhouse Mary Louis for the first time in 14 years.

“In all the games we played, we didn’t get killed, which was a big accomplishment,” Walsh said. “Last year we got run-ruled by Mary Louis twice, St. Francis Prep twice.”
