Schumer Visits Games

Youngsters participating in the second bi-annual Southeast Queens Junior Olympics were treated to an added perk to the games: A visit by New York State Senator Charles Schumer Sunday afternoon.
After a warm welcome by Junior Olympics President Allan Pope and Assemblyman William Scarborough, the senator gave a short, motivational speech to the group of about 100 kids during a break in the basketball tournament, being held in the York College gymnasium.
His stress was on athletics, the positive influence they can have, and the importance of believing in yourself. Schumer spoke of his life growing up in Brooklyn and how he went from being an exterminators son to becoming a United States Senator to encourage the kids with whatever dreams they may have.
"This is great for the community," praised Schumer. "These kids have a ton of energy, and this is the best way because its not just fun, but its something constructive for the kids to do. Growing up in sports, I know what its like for these kids. This is a great program and its a great opportunity."
One parent, who preferred to remain anonymous, was overjoyed to see the senator at the Olympic games.
"Its good for the kids and the parents to show that he [Schumer] actually cares. We need more positive things like this to happen."
The effect of Schumers presence was evident by the warm reception he received from the athletes.
"It makes me feel more aggressive knowing hes watching, because I want to impress him," explained 13-year-old Shanay Williams.
Shanay Freeman, coach of the 12- and-under and 14-and-under girls Positive Direction Wildcats teams, could tell the impact that Senator Schumer had in just a brief period of time.
"They [Schumer and other public officials present] want to see the kids grow and succeed, and it makes the kids motivated." she said.
